The “STEGRA PROJECT,” based near Boden in northern Sweden, is poised to become the world’s first renewable hydrogen-based integrated steel mill, signalling an exciting turning point for the European steel sector’s transition to carbon neutrality. This unique three-in-one plant will encompass green hydrogen production, green iron manufacturing, and green steelmaking, powered by Europe’s largest electrolyser. By substituting coal with green hydrogen, STEGRA will refine iron ore into green iron, releasing only steam – pure water. This game-changing innovation makes near-zero emission steel a reality, establishing a new industry standard. Once fully operational, this first new European steel mill in 50 years will achieve a remarkable reduction of over 7 million tonnes in annual steel emissions.
